Champions Evergrande suffer derby day shock in China

Thursday, July 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Guangzhou R&F came from behind to beat Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1 in the Canton derby on Wednesday (20th July).

While, Jiangsu Suning maintained their grip on second place in the Chinese Super League thanks to a 4-0 win over Hebei on Wednesday (20th July).

Script: It was derby day in Guangzhou as the city's R&F side were looking to halt Evergrande's seeming march to the title.

Guangzhou Evergrande started Wednesday night 13 points clear in the Super League and they almost went ahead here in the city derby inside a minute.

Former Spurs man Paulinho with the long range effort.

Yet the reigning five year champions did what champions do when they're ontop.

Ricardo Goulart's long range effort totally wrong-footing Hyun-Soo Rang.

Yet his 32nd minute opener clearly taking a big deflection.

It was no more than their domination deserved, but things changed quickly after the half-time break.

R&F equalised in the 56th minute with a well worked goal.

Renatinho's pass over the top found Eran Zahavi, and the Israeli found Hyun-Soo Rang for his first of the season.

22 minutes later, an equally sublime passage of play put R&F ahead.

Zahavi this time on the end of the through ball.

R&F inflicting a first defeat on Evergrande since their opening match of the season in March.

North to Jiangsu, where Evergrande's nearest title rivals had a chance to close the gap to 10.

They were up against Beijing Hebei who still held slim title hopes themselves.

Jiangsu were on a bad run so an early goal was welcome

    Alex Teixeira's free-kick - Roger Martinez's heading in to make it 1-0.

    Jiangsu scored two more before

Another Teixeira dead-ball - Australian international Trent Sainsbury with the finish.

4-0 the outcome for Jiangsu and they now trail by ten points with 11 matches to go in their campaign.
