Russian athletes: Possible Rio ban "an injustice"

Thursday, July 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Ekaterina Koneva and Sergei Shubenkov are among the athletes anxiously waiting to see if they will be able to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Russian athletes are hopeful that the decision from Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday (21st July) will bring them good news.

Competing at Russian National Athletics Cup on Wednesday (20th July) some of the biggest athletic stars of the Russian Olympic team said they were preparing for Rio according to the plan.

Triple jumper Ekaterina Koneva, is hopeful that she will still be able to compete in her first Olympic Games, calling the investigation into Russian doping "an injustice"

"It puts a lot of pressure on us. This topic is discussed everywhere now, all the tv channels speak about Rio, what shall we do, whether we will or will not be allowed to compete. So there is a lot of questions: why is everything like this? why is it happening with us? why are they doing this injustice to our country and our sportsmen?"

But hurdler Sergei Shubenkov admitted that the doping scandal and the uncertainty that it brings has affected the mood of the athletics team.

"When I read a lot (of news) my mood goes down, same happens when my coach reads and listens to news."

Russia will learn on Thursday if CAS intends to overturn their global competition ban.
