Brazilian armed forces stage simulation terror attack in Maracana

  • Brazilian armed forces staged a simulation of a terror attack at Rio's Maracana Station on Tuesday, in preparation for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Rio's Maracana station sits in the shadow of the iconic Maracana football stadium, one of the most famed arenas in the world.

On Tuesday professionals from the Brazilian Armed Forces (Navy, Army and Air Force) and Metro Rio, the city's underground railway network, held a simulation of a terror attack at Maracana Station.

It was the latest test security simulation ahead of next month's Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The terror simulation involved 120 professionals from the armed forces and MetroRio.

During the training an armed suspect ran inside the station wounding two employees of the rail network and taking four others hostage.

Anti-terrorist specialists used raid tactics and selective shooting to neutralise the threat.

Following the attack in Nice, where 84 people were killed, authorities have decided to increase security at the first Olympics to be held in South America.

There will be in the region of 85,000 security personnel deployed in Rio and the five cities hosting football competitions - double the number used at the 2012 London Games.

An anti-terror unit will have officers from seven key countries, including the United States and neighbouring Argentina and Paraguay.

The legendary Maracana Stadium will stage the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the finals of the men's and women's football tournaments.
