  • As security is stepped up another notch in Brazil in the build-up to the Rio Olympic Games, the Brazilian Navy is putting on lectures and offering courses in an attempt to to raise awareness of security issues among citizens and workers (18th July).

A police bomb squad responded to a report of a suspicious bag outside an apartment building in Rio de Janeiro's wealthy Leblon neighborhood on Monday.

Officers blocked off the street and used a robot to inspect a blue sports bag, which turned out to have only clothes inside.

With the Olympics Games fast approaching, Brazilian authorities are not only increasing security in the streets but also trying to raise awareness among the citizens and workers at landmarks expected to be visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists and athletes during the Olympic Games.

The Brazilian Navy has offered a course to all Museum of Tomorrow employees, which included cleaning personnel and private guards.

All of them attended a 90-minute talk which gave tips on staying alert and reporting strange activities and suspicious people.

Authorities say some 85,000 soldiers and police officers will patrol Rio's streets during the Olympic Games. Brazilian authorities expect more than half a million foreign tourists will visit during the event.
