Mexican Olympic authorities announce health measures for athletes

Tuesday, July 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Mexican Olympic authorities announced health measures for athletes at a news conference in Mexico City on Monday (18th July).

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Pablo Kuri Morales, Deputy Health Secretary for Prevention and Promotion:

"This is the first time that a Mexican delegation, like Carlos Padilla (president of Mexican Olympic committee) was saying, that will be accompanied by a female and male epidemiologist. One will be with the women (athletes) and other with the men. This is to keep the athletes and the general public informed about any doubts they might have, not only about Zika (virus), but concerns about water and food safety to help prevent any (health) threats they might encounter during the games."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Pablo Kuri Morales, Deputy Health Secretary for Prevention and Promotion:

"In general, Zika is benign illness. In fact, like I said, eight in every ten cases of people who are infected, do not have symptoms. Therefore, a protocol does not exist in Mexico, or at an international level."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Mario Garcia de la Torre, Head of the Mexican Olympic delegation:

"The two times that I was in Brazil and we visited Guanabara Bay, and at least in that area where the athletes will be participating, we did not observe any type of contamination. To that effect, we had to look extensively to find areas of accumulated rubbish."
