McLaren: Russian samples moved through 'mousehole'

  • The head of an independent commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed widespread 'state-directed' doping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and throughout Russian sport on Monday.

SOUNDBITE (English) Richard McLaren, head of WADA commission investigating doping by Russian athletes:
"Through the co-ordinating efforts of the CSP (Centre of Sports Preparation of National Teams of Russia), Russian athletes were instructed to collect what were thought to be clean urine samples outside of the 'wash-out' periods for any performance enhancing drugs they were using. These samples were stored in a freezer at the CSP. Doctor (Grigory) Rodchenkov tested some of these samples to ensure that were not going to be positive. The samples were subsequently transported secretly by the FSB from Moscow to the FSB storage freezer in their building located next to the Sochi lab where they sat waiting for the games to begin."

SOUNDBITE (English) Richard McLaren, head of WADA commission investigating doping by Russian athletes:
"During the night the samples were passed through what the IP (Independent Person) team called a 'mousehole' from the lab inside the secure perimeter to an adjacent operations room outside the perimeter. From there the sample bottles would be taken from the operations room. Now the idea of this 'mousehole' and the implementation of it was accomplished by the combined activity of the second in charge of the Moscow lab and by the FSB in a secret operation."
