Croatian comeback stuns the US

  • Borna Coric beat Jack Sock 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give Croatia a 3-2 comeback victory over the United States in their Davis Cup quarterfinal match on Sunday (17 July) in Oregon.

The United States held a delicate 2-1 lead heading into the final round of their Davis Cup tie against Croatia.

John Isner opened against Marin Cilic. The pair were inseparable in the early exchanges, and it took a tiebreak to decide it, with Cilic coming out on top.

The second set also went the way of Cilic, leaving the Croatian on the brink of victory.

He gained the crucial brake once again, and saw out the match in straight sets, to draw Croatia level at 2-2.

So it all came down to the final match of the tie between Jack Sock and Borna Coric.

The 19-year-old Croatian took the opening set, but Sock fought back to take the second.

However, that was as good as it got for the US as Coric won the third and fourth set to give Croatia a 3-2 comeback victory.

The Croats will now face France in the World Group semi-finals in September.
