It's no wonder then that the Italian could not stop Federico Delbonis in their decisive Davis Cup encounter in Pesaro on Sunday.

Fognini's marathon began on Saturday as he triumphed in his first singles encounter to level the match between Italy and Argentina at 1-1.

He then played the epic 4 hour doubles match that Italy lost in five sets.

That meant he had to beat Delbonis in order for Italy to stay in the contest but the Italian couldn't muster the strength to defeat his Argentinian opponent.

Nevertheless he put up quite a fight, eventually losing in fourt sets, 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 after over three and half hours on court.

The win for Delbonis means Argentina progress and will face the winner of the tie between Great Britain and Serbia in the semi-finals.
