Sunday, July 17 2016 by SNTV
  • Michael Phelps spoke to the media Saturday, 17 July, after the 2016 U.S. Olympic swimming team held an open workout in San Antonio, Texas. His discussed the upcoming Rio Olympics and confirmed he will retire after the games.

SOUNDBITE (English): Michael Phelps, on if he's sure he is retiring after Rio:

"Yes. A 100 percent positive. There is no coming back, there is no masters, there is nothing. There's teaching (my son) Boomer and that's it. There's no more."

SOUNDBITE (English): Michael Phelps, on if he has concerns going to Rio:

"No, not at all. You know it's obviously something that we all have to make sure we're very aware of, very cautious of and I feel like there's always something around the Olympics that comes up and I think, you know, on the other side of it everything is usually ok. So just staying as positive as we can and making sure we're cautious in every step that we take. I think that's something that will be a little bit different during this Olympics than past Olympics but I'm looking forward to Rio. I've been there a couple of times. I've been able to spend time in some of the favelas and been able to sight-see a little bit which I usually don't get a chance to do. So I'm looking forward to getting to the venue and the village actually looks nicer than any other ... Like the bedrooms look nicer than any other bedrooms that I've seen in a village so that's exciting. So I'm just looking forward to being able to get down there and be in the village and kind of get that excitement and that blood flowing through your body - it's a cool feeling."
