Spieth, Day and Willett express frustration at the Open Championship

Friday, July 15 2016 by SNTV
  • There was disappointment for some of the big guns at the Open Championship on Thursday (14th July) as Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Danny Willett all expressed frustration at not capitalising on good scoring conditions.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jordan Spieth (USA), level par:

"Very much improved to the green. It just seemed like it didn't want to go in the hole once I got in the greens. Even when I did number 11, I hit a fantastic putt that if I hit another five times in a row on the exact same line, same speed it probably goes in three out of the five. With the greens the speeds they are and the grass a little taller than we're used to, the bar kind of wiggles a little bit. That can mean it wiggles in for you or out for you."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jason Day (Aus), two-over:

"It's two-over-par on a pretty easy day out there, the next three days are going to be pretty difficult. So, I've got a lot of work to do but hopefully by the end of the day I'm not too far behind and I can slowly inch my way back into the tournament."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jason Day (Aus), two-over:

"It depends. I'm already missing greens anyway, I've been trying to save myself. If I'm gonna miss greens, I'm gonna miss greens but on hard days if I can just grind myself out and make pars it would be great. If I can hit a little bit better tomorrow that would be fantastic. Hit a few more greens, hole a few more putts, I only made two birdies today so that's pretty low on a day like this when we have no wind and the course is very gettable. So, If I'm patient and start hitting the correct shots and give myself the opportunity can get myself back in the tournament."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Danny Willett (Eng), level-par:

"Just frustration you know. Could have been a really good day ends up being distinctly average. You know, when the scoring conditions are as good as you good ask for out here It would have been nice to post a decent number, so I'm just going to have to wait, go do some practise and see where it finishes at the end of the day."
