  • One of six Palestinians competing at the Rio Olympics, swimmer Mary al-Atrash talked to SNTV about her pride in representing her country.

Mary al-Atrash will be one of the most unique athletes competing at the Rio Olympics this summer.

The swimmer is one of just six Palestinians competing in Rio.

Mary trains in a local 25m pool which is half the required Olympic standard.

Despite this Mary is willing to face the challenges head on.

    SOUNDBITE (Arabic): Mary al-Atrash, swimmer

"We are ready with the basic facilities we have, we have really humble facilities, we have a 25-metre swimming pool which is half the Olympic standard. This, of course, makes a big difference in training but we accept the challenges and we train twice everyday. We do fitness training and swimming, and we also improve our diet."

The six strong delegation is the largest Palestine has sent to the Olympics since its first participation in the Atlanta games in 1996.
