Chile win Copa

  • Lionel Messi put his penalty kick over the crossbar, Francisco Silva converted Chile's shootout finale and La Roja won their second straight Copa America title by beating Argentina 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 draw Sunday (26 June)

Argentina took on Chile on Sunday in the final of the Copa America Centenario in front of 82,026 fans at a sold out MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

It was a feisty affair from the off - Mercado leaving his mark on Alexis Sanchez

Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain had the best first-half chance in the 21st minute when he picked up a giveaway from Gary Medel, but he sent his effort wide of Claudio Bravo's far post

Brazilian referee Heber Lopes handed out eight yellows and two reds in the match. Marcelo Diaz receiving the first red, a second yellow for obstructing Messi in the 28th minute.

Messi himself then booked five minutes before half-time for simulation.

Argentina went down to 10 men three minutes later - Marcos Rojo given a straight red for a foul on Arturo Vidal. Contact seemingly minimal.

Little happened in the second-half so it was extra-time followed by penalties.

First up for Chile was Vidal - Romero making save

    Messi was next.

Castillo, Aranguiz and Beausejour converted for Chile, and Mascherano and Aguero made theirs but a Bravo save from Lucas Biglia kept it at 3-2

That brought up Francisco Silva, who calmly slotted home - cue Chilean madness.

Heartache for Messi who announced his retirement from international football after the final whistle

Chile celebrate a second straight title
