Olympics selection still as special as the first - Wiggins

Sunday, June 26 2016 by SNTV
  • Sir Bradley Wiggins looked ahead to this summer's Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro on Friday after being named in Great Britain's 26-strong squad. Wiggins will be bidding for gold in the men's team pursuit which Britain won in London in 2012.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Bradley Wiggins, Great Britain cyclist (on being selected for Team GB squad):
"You get that letter through and it's confirmation that all your hard work has paid off and you've been selected. I think this has probably been the hardest one from how many numbers we've had. It's been such a competitive year from a team pursuit point of view for those four spots. It's almost like the first hurdle. You kind of expect it from your performances but to have confirmation that you've once again been selected for your country and for the Olympic Games is still as special as the first one."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Bradley Wiggins, Great Britain cyclist:
"At this stage now it's really focussing on the job, really business like. I'm fortunate with the experience of knowing what to expect when you get there, knowing what the village is like. Getting over that initial thing of walking into the dinning hall and seeing LeBron James and the Kobe Bryants of this world and people that you only ever see on TV. Obviously people like Owain (Doull) have that to experience for the first time. It is a huge shock and quite overwhelming when you first see it. I think in some ways for myself knowing what to expect. That whole environment of what the Olympic village is about helps you to remain focussed for what we're there for."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Bradley Wiggins, Great Britain cyclist:
"We're probably one of the few countries that could post a B-team that would be good enough to get a medal at the Olympic Games. I think that's how much strength in depth we've had this year within the squad. I think that's what's driven everyone on to the level we've got to now. Guys coming back from injury and fighting back because they didn't want to miss out. It's been a competitive two years and now the selection is out there and we can get down and really focus as a group the final four and I think everyone is pretty excited about the next couple of weeks."
