Rio lab shut down 'a blow' - Andrada

Saturday, June 25 2016 by SNTV
  • Rio 2016 spokesman Mario Andrada insisted that it will still be possible to have a proper doping control system in place for the Olympic Games despite the only certified anti-doping laboratory in the Brazilian city having its accreditation suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because of 'Non-conformity with the International Standard for Laboratories'.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mario Andrada, Rio 2016 spokesman:
"We are 100 per cent committed with a clean games. We have zero tolerance regarding the use of drugs in sports and that is not going to change. We are waiting for instructions from WADA on how they want the doping control to be performed for the Rio 2016 Games. We believe that despite the short time we have for the Games it will be possible and mandatory for us to have a system."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mario Andrada, Rio 2016 spokesman:
"One possibility that we have if WADA so decides is that we ship the samples abroad to be tested by a foreign laboratory. It is not a big deal for us because we have support of the local airline, so we can transport the samples in our daily flights to Europe or the US. It is a blow, it is a problem to have the lab being suspended less than two months before the games. But it would be a bigger blow to have a lab in the Games that is not technically perfect. So we'd rather fix this problem now and have a perfect laboratory or a perfect system for doping control."
