Konta reaches Eastbourne semi-final ahead of Wimbledon

  • Dominika Cibulkova eased into the final and Jo Konta won through to the last four at the Eastbourne International on Friday (24th June).

Dominika Cibulkova reached the Eastbourne International final on Friday after dispatching Puerto Rican qualifier Monica Puig with a clinical display of tennis.

The Slovakian 12th seed, who had completed a rain-delayed quarter-final win over top seed Agnieszka Radwanska earlier in the day, showed no signs of fatigue as she eased to a 6-2, 6-1 win.

After breaking for a 4-2 lead, Cibulkova broke once more to claim the first set, and a further break for 2-0 in the second set her on the way to a comfortable victory.

Meanwhile, 11th seed Jo Konta made it through to the semi-finals after beating 2010 champion Ekaterina Makarova in a closely contested match.

The Eastbourne-based player was under pressure in the first set, but delighted the home crowd by recovering from a break down to force a tie-break - which she won by seven points to five.

In the second set, a single break of serve was all that Konta needed to secure a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory.

Konta has been seeded 17th for next week's Wimbledon Championships - the first British woman to be seeded since Jo Durie in 1984.
