Brexit not a disaster for the Premier League says Winter

  • SOUNDBITE (English) Henry Winter, Chief Football Writer for The Times:

"I think the immediate impact will be the cost of players from Europe going up. Obviously with freedom of movement, with that right being denied, European players contractually, it's going to cost them more to come in, probably 10-15 percent more. But I mean English clubs are very wealthy, particularly with the new television deal so, as usual, they'll just plough on. But it will be a cost. I'm sure the Premier League will come out with a statement and they'll say they'll be working with the authorities, the political authorities and maybe they'll come up with some different sort of work permit. But I think it's probably a good time to be an agent of Latin American players."

SOUNDBITE (English) Henry Winter, Chief Football Writer for The Times:

"I think when you look what's happened with the English clubs so even the middle-ranking clubs like Crystal Palace can get (Yohan) Cabaye, he's a proper Champions League player. That wouldn't have happened a few years ago. I think Bournemouth are wealthier than Ajax so they've got that financial muscle but I think it will be an issue. When you see the quality of coaches coming through to the Premier League, players will want to sign for (Pep) Guardiola, will want to sign for (Jose) Mourinho, so there will be that extra hook. Look at Everton now with (Ronald) Koeman there, you know players might not have wanted to have gone there from overseas to play for (Roberto) Martinez but with someone like Koeman in there, I think they'll go. Obviously they'll follow the money trail first but also I think they'll be persuaded by the quality of coach they are signing for. I don't think it's going to be a complete disaster that some people are predicting for English football."
