Muller books quarter-final spot in three set win

  • Eighth seed Gilles Muller came back from a set down to defeat Mikhail Youzhny 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 and progress to the quarter-finals of the Aegon Open in Nottingham on Wednesday (22nd June).

Gilles Muller had enjoyed a placid couple of days in Nottingham.

A bye in round one of the Aegon Open was followed by a 7-6, 6-2 win over Jiri Vesely.

But the man from Luxembourg was certainly roused from his slumbers on Wednesday.

The eighth seed lost the first set of his encounter with Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (4) - and levelled thanks to another tiebreak (7-6 (4)).

Just the sort of grit you might expect from 33-year-old Youzhny - a man once ranked as high as eighth in the world.

But the Russian slipped away in the third, Muller taking the decider 6-3 to book a meeting with Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarter-finals.
