World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Sir Craig Reedie said on Monday (20th June) he backs the IAAF's decision to exclude Russia from track and field at the Rio Olympics.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Craig Reedie, World Anti-Doping Agency president
(on the IAAF decision not to reinstate Russia):
"Well, we said that clearly after the (IAAF) decision (on Russia) was announced, from WADA. We support the decision that was taken. It clearly, in terms of the task force report that they got, backs up the information that was contained in our independent commission report last year."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Craig Reedie, World Anti-Doping Agency president
(on whether Rio 2016 will be a "clean" Olympics):
"Well, as I said this morning, there are a whole series of actions that have been taken. The (Rio) laboratory has been reaccredited and will be very well staffed with experts. You have to remember that the doping issues at an Olympic Games are handled by the IOC. They're not handled by WADA. So the taskforce that has been working for many months to get things working properly for Brazil, is there. The intelligence gathering group, which is six national anti-doping organisations all around the world, to arrange test distribution plans for pre-Games testing, is working. And if we get all of that right, then that will help greatly. On top of that is the recent re-examination of samples by the IOC from both Beijing and London, where, if the process is completed by the international confederations concerned, and it's proven that offences were committed by those athletes, then they won't be at the Games, so I don't think that anybody can accuse us of sitting back and doing nothing."
