Rio security forces hold training drill

Tuesday, June 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Rio's security forces held a training drill at Maracana Stadium on Sunday, 19 June.

With only 45 days to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, security forces train operations around one of the games main venues and the stage of the opening ceremony - the Maracana Stadium.

The objective of the drill was to rehearse the arrival at the stadium of the heads of state, Olympic family and other high ranking officials and train the integration of the various security forces that include the federal Police, military police, armed forces and highway patrol as well as the fire brigades.

Police chief and director of special projects and big events Felipe Tavares Seixas explained the drill:

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Felipe Tavares Seixas, Police chief and director of special projects and big events:

'We have trained the security of heads of state and of the Olympic family as they move from various places in the city to the stadium. Inside we secured their access to elevators to their seats and then their return to the reception area where they will join their specific motorcades. All this so that we can have it perfectly timed.'

Earlier this year, Rio de Janeiro's state security secretary acknowledged that cuts to his budget pose a risk to the Olympics.

Rio will deploy about 65,000 policemen and up to 20,000 soldiers to guard the games, the largest contingent in Brazilian history.
