Ireland's Shane Lowry carved out a two-shot lead at 5-under before the third round of the weather-delayed U.S. Open was suspended due to darkness on Saturday. He put himself in a great position for the completion of the final round.

The 29-year-old made a pair of birdies early on Sunday morning to to move him within 18 holes of his first major title.

Andrew Landry finished on 3-under for the tournament.

Johnson set up a birdie with his approach shot at 9 to join Lowry at the top of the leaderboard at 5-under.

Lowry's three-putt bogey on the 10th left Johnson two shots clear, only for the American to then be spoken to by officials on the 12th tee regarding an incident on the fifth hole. Johnson was told the question of whether he had caused the ball to move, and would therefore be liable for a penalty, would be reviewed after the round.

Lowry tapped in for birdie to get to 4-under and one-shot back of Johnson for the lead.

Johnson set up a birdie with his approach shot at 18 to capture the U.S. Open.

Only after he was guaranteed the silver trophy did the USGA assess him a one-shot penalty, turning his final score into a 1-under 69 for a three-shot victory.

Lowry finished tied for second. The Championship going to Dustin Johnson.
