  • Florian Mayer beat Alexander Zverev 6-2 5-7 6-3 in-all German Gerry Weber Open final at Halle in Germany on Sunday (19th June).

It was an all-German affair in the final of the Gerry Weber Open as Florian Mayer faced Alexander Zverev on Sunday (19th June).

The experienced Mayer took an early lead, but his teenage opponent was keen to showcase his considerable talent.

However, Zverev's touch deserted him in the next game as Mayer comfortably took the opener 6-2.

The second set was much more even, with Zverev coming up trumps when it mattered to force a decisive third set.

Mayer regained control of the match, but Zverev remained stubborn and survived five championship points.

In the end though Mayer pulled through to take victory and claim his first title since 2011.

The German had considered retiring after missing nearly a year-and-a-half through injury.

Victory here clearly proves Mayer made the right decision to play on.
