  • Lionel Messi scored and added two assists in his first Copa America start this year to lead Argentina over Venezuela 4-1 on Saturday (18 June) and into a semifinal against the host United States.

It was Lionel Messi's first start in the Copa America this year, and it's fair to say Argentina fans were pretty excited as they watched their side line up against Venezuala.

It took less than eight minutes for Messi to make an impact, this lofted pass from the sideline to Gonzalo Higuain, who split two defenders and booted it in.

Higuain score again in the 28th minute.. an open goal was all his.. and Argentina went 2-up.

Argentina took a 3-0 lead off a fantastic rush in the 60th minute. Lovely link up play from Nicolas Gaitan, Higuain and Messi and with that, the number 10 had scored his 54th goal in international play, tying the national record set by Gabriel Batistuta,

Venezuela finally broke the clean sheet in the 70th minute when Salomon Rondon headed a cross from Alejandro Guerra off the post and in.

But Argentina hadn't finished.. Marcos Rojo crossing to Messi, and then to Erik Lamela who made to 4-1.

With victory in the bag, Argentina will face the United States in the semifinals.
