  • World number one Jason Day spoke on Monday (13th June) ahead of the 116th US Open and Oakmont Country Club, Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

"It's going to be a premium on hitting fairways this week. I think if you can do that, it's no small feat to get on the green either. The greens are very difficult. I think the greens were slower today than what they were last week when I came here Friday. Another guy in my group said yesterday they were running 14-8. This is my first time I've been here in the U.S. Open so I don't have any experience from back in 2007 so I don't know how fast the greens were going. Obviously I can see it on tape but it's obviously better when you go and feel it. Yeah, the rough is thick, the greens; everything is starting to firm out now. Once that happens, it's going to be tough to hit fairways, and if that happens it's going to be pretty much impossible to get anywhere near the green."

"You have to understand that things are going to get bad, especially coming out on a golf course like this. There may be a guy that gets off to a good start, a hot start. He may be one or two or three under maybe, obviously depending on how they set up the course. The biggest thing is to not sit there and go okay I need to start forcing things; I need to catch up to that person. You start doing that, you start making mental errors, you start having bogeys. Once you bring in bogeys, your certainly bring in double bogeys because it's very easy to do that here. The biggest thing is, if you're in trouble, just minimise mistakes. Try to get it on the green somewhere and two-putt, make your bogey, walk off and try to snag a birdie somewhere. Last time it was here in 2007, Angel (Cabrera) won with 5-over. If we have hot, dry conditions, it's probably going to be very close to that score. There's going to be a lot more frustration than joy on a golf course like this. If you can handle your attitude and emotions, you're obviously have a head start over most guys because some of these guys are going to come out here and go, this is impossible and have a bad attitude and hopefully that's not me this week."
