Rashford & Sturridge included in final England squad

Wednesday, June 01 2016 by SNTV
  • Daniel Sturridge and Marcus Rashford were included in the England squad for Euro 2016 but Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend missed out.

The big news from Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 squad announcement is that Marcus Rashford is in.

The Manchester United striker was a surprise inclusion in the preliminary squad, yet has now made the final 23.

It had been widely assumed that Rashford or Daniel Sturridge would miss out on the squad, yet both strikers have been included.

The two players to miss out alongside the already injured Fabian Delph are Andros Townsend and Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater helped Leicester claim a shock Premier League title, while Townsend was a member of the Newcastle team relegated from the top flight.

Rashford scored within minutes of making his England debut on Friday night and Hodgson's decision caps off a remarkable season for the teenager.

Rashford on Monday signed a new contract with United - for a reported £60,000 a week - and only made his professional debut on 25 February, but scored eight goals in 18 club games to earn an international call-up.

Sturridge was forced to miss England's two warm-up friendlies through injury, yet his appearance at training on Monday is likely to have nudged him ahead of Townsend.

England will play Portugal in their final warm-up game on Thursday before travelling to France.
