British Paralympian David Weir made history as the first wheelchair racer to complete a mile in under three minutes at Sunday's (29th May) Westminster Mile in London.
With six Paralympic gold medals and six victories at the London Marathon already under his belt, David Weir added another astonishing feat to his list of achievements on Sunday - as he became the first wheelchair athlete to complete a mile in under three minutes.
Weir completed the Westminster Mile event in London in a time of two minutes and 57 seconds, bettering his previous world mark by six seconds - and secured his fourth consecutive victory in the event.
The 36-year-old finished ahead of South African rival Ernest van Dyk who, like Weir, won four gold medals at London 2012.
Weir holds the British record at all track distances up to 5,000 metres, as well as the 10-kilometre, half-marathon and marathon records on the road.
SOUNDBITE (English): David Weir, six-time Olympic gold medallist:
"It feel amazing you know, to break the world record at my age, you know I'm 37 next week. You don't think you're going to break any more records when you get to that age, but the training has gone well. I was a bit disappointed after the London Marathon (finished third) and the training has gone really well, I've been really pleased with myself and the way things have worked, with the team around me who got me into such good shape to go under three minutes."
