Monday, May 30 2016 by SNTV
  • Number two seed Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals of the French Open in Paris on Sunday (29th May), following a straight-sets win over John Isner of the United States. There he will meet Richard Gasquet, after the French number nine seed upset Kei Nishikori of Japan, seeded five, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Seeded fifteen, Isner was hoping to become the first American to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros since Andre Agassi did so thirteen years ago.

The first set went to a tiebreak and Murray shaded it by 11 points to nine, converting his second set point on the Isner serve after saving three.

A marathon fourth game in the third set saw Murray break again and after two hours and 43 minutes, Murray closed out a 7-6(9), 6-4, 6-3 win and booked a place in the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the fifth time.

Murray holds a 7-3 career head-to-head record over Gasquet and has won the last five matches between the pair.
