Wales to right wrongs against England

  • Wales coach Warren Gatland spoke to the media on Friday (27th May) ahead of his side's international test match against England at Twickenham Stadium on Sunday (29th May).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales coach (asked if Wales were seeking revenge after losing to England at Twickenham in this year's Six Nations Championship):

"We didn't make a massive issue of the fact that George North wasn't out (of play) at the end of the game. Now, we just accepted that was a decision, we accepted that the AR (assistant referee) made a mistake. In his judgement he thought he was out. Obviously the video, replays showed he wasn't. It would have been interesting if that play had been allowed to go on and.... the ball has gone straight into Rhys Webb's hands and you don't know the outcome. I think there's other teams in the world who would have jumped up and down and made a big.... song and dance about, that decision, and we just accepted it as a genuine mistake and the guy got it wrong and moved on, so.... because we knew there, at the end of the day there were other aspects of our performance that weren't good enough and particularly that first half and we have spoken about that and it's a chance for us to, redress that and, I'd just say, a team that's supposed to be that good (England), who had dominated for so long, and yet we were able to, in 15 or 20 minutes, get back into the game and nearly sneak it at the end."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Warren Gatland, Wales coach (on Wales' Summer tour to New Zealand):

"Our whole focus in the last two weeks hasn't been geared up to this game, it's, we want to go out there and play well and it's looking a little bit longer term, it's looking a couple of weeks in New Zealand and.... throw in some things and preparing for some things in New Zealand because they do defend differently to the way England will defend and play differently as well. So you've got to be conscience of that as part of your preparation, but.... there's no way that we want to under value the, how important it is when Wales play England because it's, such a traditional game and, over the years, I think there's very little between, the win/loss ratio. I think they're just, well one ahead, a couple ahead of us at the moment so, be nice to close that ledger down again."
