Torres ready to realise dream with Atletico

Saturday, May 28 2016 by SNTV
  • Diego Simeone and Fernando Torres spoke on Friday (27th May) ahead of the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid

SOUNDBITE (English) Fernando Torres, Atletico Madrid forward (Q: You've already won the Champions League with Chelsea, what would it mean to you to win with your boyhood club?)

"It means everything. Everything I dreamt of as a kid, tomorrow I have a chance to make this dream come true. I have been able to play for great teams and the Spanish national team and I've won many things but this one is special, it's different. It's what I always wanted as kid. Maybe more than I dreamt. I had the chance to come back to the club, the club and Simeone gave me the chance to come back and fight for what I really wanted. It's hard to be in the situation I'm in now. I fight too much to have a place in the team and I fight a lot to score goals again and be an important player for the team. Tomorrow is the game of my life, without doubt."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid head coach (Q: How will Atletico Madrid play?)

"How will we play? Well with eleven players all in their area scoring goals, non-stop! It's funny you ask this. We're not really going to change much. (Real) Madrid have played with a team that has been largely unchanged for the past few yearS - they have same players as before, whereas we have changed a bit more. In regards to the line-up and formation, it's the same formation that we always have, and the way we are going to play is not going to change that much. Casemiro's presence makes (Real) Madrid a lot more dangerous in the counter-attack, and against Manchester City that is how they played both games. So that's not a bad situation, because many people believe playing on the counter-attack is not good football. It's clear that with (Real) Madrid, if you give them space they are very dangerous."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid head coach (Q: People are saying that you are anti-football, you will sit and lie and wait for the counter-attack. Cristiano Ronaldo said that's what you convey to your players. Do you think that is disrespectful since you've made two finals in three years?)

"Well I respect people, especially great players like Ronaldo. Football is like politics and religion - everybody is entitled to an opinion and he's free to voice his own."
