  • Second seed Andy Murray is through to the second round of the French Open after completing a hard-fought five-set victory over Radek Stepanek on Tuesday (May 24). While Rafael Nadal wins in three sets to advance.

Two sets to one down in the first round of the French Open, Andy Murray was in a spot of bother.

He played a fine third set to-love and then levelled up the match taking the fourth 6-3.

Not since 2008 has Murray gone out in the first round of a Slam, yet Radek Stepanek showed no signs of letting up.

The No.2 seed had a number of break point opportunities in the fifth, yet the Czech qualifier continued to defy Murray,

And appeared to have the vast support of the Chatrier court.

Murray did find the crucial break to serve for the match at 6-5 after more three hours and forty minutes on court.

Murray recording his ninth win from two sets down at a Slam - next up Mathias Bourgue - a qualifier from France.

Elsewhere, nine time French Open Champion, Rafael Nadal, despatched Sam Groth in little over an hour.

Nadal has lost just twice in 73 matches at Roland Garros.
