Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori spoke following their wins in the first round of the French Open in Paris on Monday (23rd May).
SOUNDBITE (English) Stan Wawrinka, defeated Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4:
(Q. Last year you also sort of had some controversy or trouble beginning of the tournament, and now this is sort of a little bit of trouble beginning of the tournament. Is that, in a way, not a bad thing to get through?)
"It's a good thing to get through, but it's never, never the best to start with five-set match and not play your best tennis. You always want to play good tennis and win matches in three sets. But today I'm really happy with the way I find solution. It's really good victory, good win for me, because it's the first match. He was playing really well. Wasn't easy for myself to get into the match. I find solution, so now I have a chance to keep improving for the rest of the tournament."
SOUNDBITE (English) Kei Nishikori, defeated Simone Bolelli 6-1, 7-5, 6-3:
(Q. Obviously you have had a pretty good clay season, how confident do you feel on this surface, what you feel the next step is?)
"Well, yeah. I really feel confidence, this, especially these three years. I have been winning Barcelona two times. Couldn't defend this title this year, but I have been beating top 10 guys on clay. I mean, still, it's not my best surface yet maybe, but I like better hard, hard court still. But on clay, you know, I think the biggest challenge is beating Rafa (Nadal) and Novak (Djokovic) and, you know, Andy (Murray), too. I think that's my next challenge."
