  • Manchester United have sacked Louis van Gaal, according to reports on Monday (23rd May) - the 64-year-old Dutchman departing just two days after winning the English FA Cup final.

Manchester United have sacked Louis Van Gaal after two years in charge of the club.

Despite lifting the FA Cup in his final game with the Red Devils, it wasn't enough to save his job.

The Dutchman is currently discussing severance terms and according to reports, will be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal took control at United after leading the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In his first season he guided the club to a fourth place finish and Champions League football.

However, in his second year, not only did United get elminated at the group stages of Europe's top competition, but they could only muster fifth in the league.

This despite enormous spending by Van Gaal.

The 64-year-old spent more the £250 million on signings in his two seasons at the helm, but the new arrivals have been hit and miss.

Mourinho's appointment could be confirmed as early as Tuesday when the Portuguese manager will meet with United officials.
