Foliforov stars as Kruijswijk increases his lead

  • Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk opened up a big lead in the Giro d'Italia after a mountain time trial on Sunday.

    Stage 15 at the Giro d'Italia was a chance for Vicenzo Nibali to claw back an advantage, but the Sicilian didn't have it easy.

    Already losing time, a bike change got him back up and running after a dropped chain in the time trial. But the damage was done. and he finished the stage in 25th.

    Alexander Foliforov delivered the surprise of the day, the Russian won the stage - an 11-kilometre entirely uphill leg from Castelrotto to Alpe di Siusi - in 28 minutes, 39 seconds.

    Overall leader Steven Kruijswijk was again in strong form, the Lotto NL-Jumbo rider attempting to become the first Dutchman to win the Giro.

    He finished 0.16 seconds behind Foliforov... finishing the stage in second and maintaining his overall lead

    Alejandro Valverde was third, 23 seconds back - and sits fourth in general classification. Nibali falls from second overall to third.
