Chaves wins Stage 14 of Giro d'Italia

  • Colombian Esteban Chaves won the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday, while Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk claimed the overall lead after finishing the stage in second place.

    The dramatic scenery of the Dolomites for Stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia, and with it brutal climbs that would shake up the top order.

    Overall leader Andrey Amador was one such rider to struggle, eventually losing four minutes and falling out of contention.

    At the front of the race, breakaway rider Darwin Atapuma became the man to beat, Vincenzo Nibali tried, but dropped back on the climb.

    Atapuma maintained the lead until just one kilometre from the finish line in Corvara.

    Esteban Chaves, Steven Kruijswijk and Georg Preidler sprinted to the line.. and Orica GreenEdge rider Chaves timed his move to perfection to claim the stage win.

    Dutchman Kruijswijk finished close behind in second just ahead of Preidler - and now leads the overall classification by 41 seconds over Nibali, who finished fifth.

    Nibali will now look to take time back on Kruijswijk in Sunday's 10.8km uphill time trial from Castelrotto to Alpe di Siusi.
