IOC won't let politics interfere with doping suspensions

Thursday, May 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates talks about the latest recent doping tests, dating back to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Coates, Australian Olympic Committee President:

"Yeah. It's a lot. But it is, this was a very targeted test. And what pleases the IOC with our zero tolerance policy is that the testing is catching up. And my mantra has always been if we don't get you at the games we'll get you later and that's being validated.

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Coates, Australian Olympic Committee President:

"I don't know where these athletes come from. I don't know what the sports are. It may be that if there's a significant number from another federation, an International Federation in the first instance will also put them out. We also, we expect within a week, will have the results of the retesting of, I think 250 samples from the London Olympics. And so we will be monitoring that and the same processes also apply."

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Coates, Australian Olympic Committee President:

(Question: John, will the IOC be game to keep Russia out of the Olympics given it's a superpower?)

"If it is a significant problem in a particular sport which athletics has said, yes absolutely. There will be no political interference with this."
