WADA suspends Kenya and continues Russia probe

Saturday, May 14 2016 by SNTV
  • WADA suspended Kenya's anti-doping agency on Thursday (12th May) and said it will probe Russia following new doping allegations.

SOUNDBITE (English): Sir Craig Reedie, WADA President:

"We had agreement with Kenya and the (sporting) authorities on the legislation that we wished them to put through parliament. During the parliamentary process, there were changes, and some of those changes mean that the current state of the law is not compliant with the (WADA) code."

SOUNDBITE (English): Sir Craig Reedie, WADA President:

"Everybody in Kenya will be disappointed in the decision today but, that having been said, it is not a proper policy for a world agency to have one of its major countries non-compliant. We hope that they become compliant as quickly as possible so that their athletes will take part in the proper spirit in the Olympic Games."

SOUNDBITE (English): Sir Craig Reedie, WADA President:

"Now, if you're specifically talking about the Russian anti-doping agency - you saw the report today - they clearly are on the way (to being compliant), but I question whether they will (have) completed that process by the time of the Games in Rio. The original testing plan and original plan for compliance could run for a period of up to two years. But, as you can see, although they are non-compliant, we are actually making efforts to fill in the gaps that otherwise they would do, and we're doing it with international testing arrangements. We're doing some education and we're helping them build their capacity."

SOUNDBITE (English): David Howman, WADA Director General:

"We have encountered issues over the years - some of them have been high profile, some of them not. But on a daily basis I get to the office and have to react to some issue. At the present, they're all high profile, and I suggest for two reasons - one, Russia, and two, Rio."
