English weather an 'obstacle' - Mathews

Saturday, May 07 2016 by SNTV
  • At Lord's on Friday (6th May), Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Graham Ford looked ahead to the upcoming Test series against England.

SOUNDBITE (English) Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka Test captain (on the challenge of playing England):

"It's going to be a challenge no matter who you have in the team, it's going to be a challenge playing against England in England. Early summer is going to be cold for us. The main obstacle and the main challenge is going to be the weather for us initially and then yes, we are preparing ourselves as best we possibly can. Yes we don't have Sanga and Mahela (Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene) anymore which we had in 2014 but unfortunately we don't have them. We've got to move on, we've got take up the challenge with who we have in the squad. I believe we can still win if we play to our potential."

SOUNDBITE (English) Graham Ford, Sri Lanka coach (asked about the England team):

"The England Test side at the moment is a very, very good unit. They've played fantastic cricket for a while now and surprised some people by winning the Ashes convincingly but that certainly sent out a message about what a good team they are. They played very well in South Africa and as Tim (Abraham, journalist) said they're probably looking to make a few improvements on what they've got. So certainly a really tough challenge for us but exciting for us. There's no better way to grow a young team than to play against a really good outfit."
