    Rafael Nadal defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3 6-3 on Tuesday to win his 11th consecutive match this year and advance to the third round of the Madrid Open.

    Nadal broke Kuznetsov's serve once in the first set and twice in the second to secure the win in his opening match at the clay-court tournament he has won twice in the last three years.

    Albert Ramos-Vinolas booked his place in the second round with a straight sets win over Jeremy Chardy.

    The Spaniard beat the Frenchman 6-3 6-4 in one hour eight minutes.

    Borna Coric also reached the second round with a straights sets win.

    The 19-year-old Croatian, the youngest player in the top 4 and known as the "mini-Djokovic" for having a similar playing style as the world number one, beat Nicolas Almagro 6-2 6-2.

    Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro shed a tear when he defeated 14th seed Dominic Thiem 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

    The former US Open champion, who has been hampered by injury in recent years, hit 10 aces and saved all seven break points he faced to overcome the Austrian, a winner of two ATP World Tour titles this year.
