130th-ranked American Louisa Chirico, a qualifier, upset 14th-seeded Ana Ivanovic 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 at the Madrid Open on Monday (2nd May).

While third seed Garbine Muguruza crashed out of the Madrid Open, losing 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round.

19-year-old qualifier of the United States, Louisa Chirico, faced Grand Slam winner Ana Ivanovic in the second round of the Madrid Open on Monday.

Ivanvovic used her experience early on to manipulate Chirico around the court and broke to lead 3-2.

She would go on to take the set 7-5.

However, a devastating second set from the American saw her take that 6-1.

And then, in what is so often the crucial game - the seventh - Chirico broke to lead the match 4-3.

She held her nerve and serve, before Ivanovic lost hers.

The 19-year-old American will now face tournament 4th seed Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

Another surprise looked on the cards when Romania's Irinia-Camelia Begu went into an early lead over Garbine Muguruza.

However, the No.3 seed was putting up a fight.

Last year's Wimbledon finalist coming back to win the first set 7-5.

The second went into a tiebreak with Begu even trailing by a mini-break.

Yet here she led 6-4 and then forced Muguruza into the error to level up the match.

Into the decider, Muguruza was staring at defeat at 3-5 down. The Spaniard hitting deep, yet it was too deep as Begu clinched a famous win.

Up next for Begu is Christina McHale, who herself surprised 13th seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets.
