Murray gained clay confidence after Madrid win

Tuesday, May 03 2016 by SNTV
  • Top tennis players looked ahead on Monday (2nd May) to competing in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 series Mutua Madrid Masters.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Murray (asked if coming into the tournament as defending champion gives him a psychological boost):

"Yeah, I think it helps. Last year here was a very important week for me, winning against some of the top players in the world on the clay gave me a lot of confidence, and belief on this surface, which I didn't really have before. I was kind of always going into clay court seasons a little bit unsure about how I might do and not that confident in myself, but, here last year really helped that.... and yeah, hope I can have another good performance this year."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stan Wawrinka (on his form this year):

"It's been a good beginning, for sure. Two titles was very good for me. Now it's the clay season. Happy to play, to be back here in Madrid. (I started) quite well in Monaco, losing to Rafa (Nadal) in (the quarter-finals), but let's see what I can improve for the rest of the clay season."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (on moving up into seventh place in the ATP world rankings:

"I think it's good for me to be at this level because one year ago, I came back from injury and.... I didn't know if I was able to come back at this level. Today, really happy to be seeded in most of.... the tournaments on the tour and I hope I will be able to do good results.... in the next part of the season."
