  • American Christian McHale knocked out 13th seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the second round of the Madrid Open on Monday (2nd May).

    Madrid Open fourth seed Victoria Azarenka beat Alize Cornet in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 on Monday (2nd May) to reach the third round.

    Monday saw the start of the Madrid Open, Christina McHale took to the court first and reached the third round with a straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over 13th seed Karolina Pliskova.

    The 23-year-old American, who is 59th in the WTA rankings, converted four of the six break points she created and wrapped up the match in an hour and 37 minutes.

    She will face the winner of the match between Irina-Camelia Begu and third seed Garbine Muguruza.

    Petra Kvitova is safely through to the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Russian Elena Vesnina.

    The 26-year-old Czech converted three of the five break points created, which was enough to secure victory in an hour and 14 minutes.

    The tournament's fifth seed's next opponent will be Australian Daria Gavrilova after she beat Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

    Finally, Victoria Azarenka had never lost to Alize Cornet in their four previous encounters and extended that record following a 6-3, 6-2 win.

    Cornet could only convert one of the eight break points she created, while her Belarussian opponent took five of her nine.

    Azarenka wrapped up the contest in an hour and 23 minutes.
