  • Gilles Simon and Feliciano Lopez made it through the first round of the Madrid Open on Monday (2nd May).

    It took over two-and-a-half hours for Feliciano Lopez to beat Leonardo Mayer in the first round of the Madrid Open.

    Lopez took the first via a tie-break but dropped the second.

    The Spaniard recovered to win 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4.

    Gilles Simon had to wait nearly two-and-a-half hours for his victory against Marcos Baghdatis.

    The Frenchman took the first set 6-3, but Baghdatis fought back to take the second 6-3.

    Simon, the 16th seed, regained his composure to see out the match for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph.
