Kohlschreiber and Thiem to meet in final of BMW Open

  • Both Philipp Kohlschreiber, who defeated Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-4 and Dominic Thiem, who came from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev, reach the final of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany on Saturday

    With a place in the final of the BMW Open up for grabs, fourth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber met fifth seed Fabio Fognini

    The Italian was carrying a calf injury and made a string of unforced errors which allowed Kohlschreiber to race into a 5-0 lead. After just 26 minutes, the German took the first set 6-1

    The second set saw renewed hope for Fognini and Kohlschreiber's serve was put under pressure for the first time.

    But Fognini's challenge proved short-lived, Kohlschreiber edged ahead went on to serve out to love for a 6-1, 6-4 victory, He makes the final for the second consecutive year.

    Third seed Dominic Thiem met German teenager Alexander Zverev in the other semi-final

    Cheered on by the home crowd, Zverev broke to lead 2-1, it was cancelled out by Thiem but the 19-year-old broke again and took the first set by six games to four.

    Thiem was not short on support either, and in the second set he raised his game.

    After breaking for a 3-1 lead, the world number 15 took the set 6-2.

    And Thiem was scarcely troubled in the decider, this ace giving him a 4-6 6-2 6-3 win and setting him up for the final against two-time champion Kohlschreiber.
