Martinez: It's been a really painful week

  • Everton beat Bournemouth 2-1 on Saturday to bring an end to their recent run of poor results and ease some of the pressure on manager Roberto Martinez.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eddie Howe, Bournemouth manager

(on speculation that the side are "already on holiday" with nothing to play for):

"People have been accusing (us) of that for weeks. From our perspective, I can assure them that I'm training the players as hard as ever. We're desperate to win. We're desperate to succeed as a group and losing hurts. It doesn't matter who you are playing against. Our recent fixture list has been very very tough but we're determined to try and end the season on a high if we can."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager:

"Well, it's always important to get that winning feeling back and that was exactly what we did. I thought we started the game well with Tom Cleverley taking a very good finish and then we felt very hard done (by) with the Bournemouth goal being allowed to stand because Matthew Pennington was impeded and obviously he was a little bit off balance and was pushed aside and it was just in front of the linesman. But, from that point on, I thought it was long enough for us to be able to get back and we got the winning goal. I think at times we had to dig deep, we had to show a real strong resilience."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton manager

(on fans calling for him to be replaced):

"I can understand. Obviously we have been through a very painful week, a very painful time. We had high hopes. We wanted to go to Wembley and we wanted to go to the final. We couldn't achieve that and we have had eight defeats at home so I cannot hide that it is a real disappointment for all of us, not just the fans, the players, myself. All of us. And we want to correct that."
