Allardyce: "Do I look relieved?"

Sunday, May 01 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction from the Britannia Stadium on Saturday after an injury-time penalty from Jermain Defoe salvaged a 1-1 draw for Sunderland at Stoke City in the English Premier League.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sam Allardyce, Sunderland manager:

"Do I look relieved? Yeah. I was relieved, yeah. I was happy to accept a point today that was a point gained rather than two points lost. I thought our performance wasn't our best, we accept that. We looked a little bit nervous, more than we've ever looked before in the last four or five games, maybe the lads are feeling the pressure a little bit today and that caused us, in possession particularly, to give too many easy balls away, but finally in the end played a very good ball from Yann M'Vila and a super little touch from Jermaine Defoe. I don't think anyone can complain about the penalty.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sam Allardyce, Sunderland manager:

"Pleased the referee was brave enough to give the penalty on the last minute and we're still fighting, which is the most important thing. With three games to go, we're still fighting to stay in this league."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Hughes, Stoke City manager:

"we're disappointed obviously because performance-wise it was considerably better than we've produced in recent weeks, so I was pleased with that, but I think we all felt the referee played a part in allowing then to get something out of the game which I didn't think, in comparison to what we produced, I didn't think they deserved to take a point out of it."
