Handball gets happy in Rio

  • Handball heads to Rio for the Olympic draw and their test event in the Future Arena on Friday (29th April).

To Rio now for the Handball Olympic draw. The International Handball Federation played a test event at the Future Arena on Friday (29th April).

The day decides what will happen for all twentyfour teams - 12 mens, 12 womens - come the 5th August.

Teams were divided into two groups and Brazil, as host nation, were allowed to pick which they'd rather face - something that rather took women's Head Coach Morten Soubak by surprise.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Morten Soubak, Brazil Women's Head Coach:

"I have the chance to [laughs] say in which spot we are going. We are going to group A."

Rio's preparation for the Games has come up against a fair bit of scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly after concerns around the Zika outbreak in Brazil.

Handball is happy though, says Miguel Roca of the International Handball Federation:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Miguel Roca, International Handball Federation's 1st Vice-President:

"It has been fantastic because the development has been according to the plan. And so, we don't have any problems for the arena itself."

If you're new to handball, better get swotting now - you've only 97 days to go until the opening ceremony of Rio 2016.

Tips from us: as 2013 world champions Brazil's women stand a good chance of taking gold - and look out for the French men: they took first place in Beijing and London so could be in line for the triple come August.
