Maiden Challenge Cup Final for Montpellier

Sunday, April 24 2016 by SNTV
  • Montpellier beat Newport Gwent Dragons 22-12 on Saturday (23rd April) to reach their first European Rugby Challenge Cup Final.

Montpellier will face Harlequins in the final of the Challenge Cup after an impressive 22-12 win over Newport Gwent Dragons at the Altrad Stadium.

A late revival by the Welsh side saw the visitors score two tries to prevent a whitewash in an otherwise dominant display by the French hosts.

Montpellier raced into a 12-0 interval lead following a series of penalties from Demetri Catrakilis. The 26-year-old Catrakilis kicked five in total and after Bismark du Plessis went over, the home side found themselves 22-0 ahead on the hour mark.

However, the Dragons restored some pride with two tries of their own. First through Hallam Amos before Carl Meyer went over with just two minutes remaining.

It proved too little too late for the visitors, who suffered their second successive semi-final defeat after a 45-16 reverse against Edinburgh last season.

The final will take place at the Grand Stade de Lyon on Friday 13th May.
