Pouille powers into breakthrough final

Sunday, April 24 2016 by SNTV
  • Lucas Pouille of France and Fernando Verdasco of Spain reach the final of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, Romania on Saturday (23rd April).

Two underdogs will meet in the final of the Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest on Sunday: world no 72 Frenchman Lucas Pouille knocked out number three seed Federico Delbonis to reach his first ATP Tour final - before Fernando Verdasco beat defending champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second semi on Saturday (23rd April).

Delbonis looked strong after collecting his Grand Prix Hassan II title in Morocco at the start of the month, but Pouille had reached the last 16 in Miami and Monte Carlo, taking big scalps David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet along the way.

The 22-year-old's 2016 has been one of huge progress and he kept things clinical here to win 7-6(4), 6-3 in 98 minutes.

The second semi was a Spanish affair. Garcia-Lopez most recently beat Verdasco in Madrid last year, but Verdasco - who partnered Nadal in doubles at Monte Carlo - had won all three of their previous meetings on clay.

Verdasco broke early in both the first and second set. He took the first but the defending champion fought back, winning four games on the bounce to take the match into a decider.

But the world no 37 became increasingly frustrated as veteran Verdasco built up a 5-2 lead before breaking again to close out the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Pouille will be playing for his first ATP World Tour Title on Sunday; Verdasco, his seventh.
