Kvitova sets up Stuttgart semi-final clash with Kerber

Saturday, April 23 2016 by SNTV
  • Petra Kvitova reached her first WTA semi-final of the year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Friday ousting Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, to set up a semi-final meeting with Angelique Kerber.

Kerber beat Carla Suarez Navarro a 6-2, 6-4 in her quarter-final encounter.

Number five seed Petra Kvitova has never got past the first round in her previous attempts in Stuttgart,

Kvitova had come back from the brink of defeat in her previous match against Monica Niculescu, but this time she got off to a flying start, allowing her third-seeded Garbine Muguruza just one game in the opening set.

Muguruza, who has had a patchy year so far, showed her trademark fighting spirit to level the match, playing more aggressively to surge back into contention 6-3.

But there was no stopping Kvitova in the deciding set as Muruguza's errors - and double faults - mounted up.

An emphatic 6-0 win in the decider leaves Kvitova well placed to face an in-form Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

Second seed Kerber moved a step closer to a successful defence of her title with a 6-2, 6-4 quarter-final victory over Carla Suarez Navarro

The German survived a second set wobble to ease into the last four to set up a clash with Czech Kvitova
