Tuesday, April 19 2016 by SNTV
  • Former athlete Oscar Pistorius will be sentenced between 13-17 June for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a Pretoria High Court judge said on Monday (18th April).

Crowds of press - and some supporters - greeted Oscar Pistorius as he arrived at court in Pretoria on Monday.

The Olympian appeared briefly in court where a judge scheduled five days in June to determine his sentence.

SOUNDBITE (English) Aubrey Lewdwaba, judge ++ENDS ON JUDGE LEAVING++:

"The court order that I made previously is amended accordingly and the draft order marked 'x' is made an order of this court. Your matter is postponed to the 13th of June 2016 and it will be heard until the 17th of June 2016. Do you understand? Do you understand? Alright. Anything? Anything? Thank you. Okay, court adjourns."

The 29-year-old double amputee sprinter was found guilty of murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013.

He appealed his murder conviction at South Africa's Constitutional Court, arguing that a lower court erred when it overturned his manslaughter conviction and found him guilty of murder.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, though it can be reduced in some circumstances.
