Johnson reigns in Spain

Monday, April 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Andrew Johnston won the Open de Espana with a score of one-over-par on Sunday (17th April) - it's the first time in 20 years that a European Tour event has been won with an over-par score.

The course at Valderrama continued to challenge players on day four of the Open de Espana.

Pars, let alone birdies, were at a premium.

Sergio Garcia - a co-supporter of the event - struggled all week, but gave the crowd something to cheer with a brilliant final round.

He hit a round of 67 on the par-71 course to finish in third spot - the on-watching Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale seemed impressed.

Dutchman Joost Luiten finished second - a level-par final round leaving him a single shot short of this man - Andrew Johnson.

Johnson hit a round of one-under to clinch his first-ever title, and it's a remarkable rise for the Englishman.

The 27 year-old only qualified for the European Tour in 2012, then he lost his card and struggled for fitness.

However, he returned in 2014 and now enters the winner's circle.

His winning score of one-over-par is also notable.

It's the first time in 20 years that a European Tour event has been won with an over-par score.
